Communication
Outstanding communication skills are one of the most important tools a trainer can have. If we can have effective communication between Squadron Cadet Training Officers (CTO) and Area Director of Training (DT) then we can have a more efficient and beneficial candidate process. A great way to enhance this is by using separate monthly reports. The monthly reports I plan on creating will document everything that a CTO does and it is submitted to the Area DT. In turn, the Area DT will compile a monthly report from his squadron reports and submit it to the National DT. From here I can give recognition for individual training programs or assist those programs that are struggling.
Maltraining
As the National DT my goal would be to eliminate maltraining. I understand that maltraining is not intentional, but sometimes accidents do happen. In order to be proper trainers, we must master the AFOATS Training Manual (ATM). A DT or CTO needs to make the ATM his or her job, because, frankly, it is their job. The ATM is used throughout every platform of training in the United States Air Force. It details what training is to be used in certain situations and more importantly, it lays out what improper (mal) training is, to include hazing. If we memorize and master the ATM then the chances of the accidental maltraining incident occurring is reduced.
Be Prepared
Ultimately the best way to ensure proper training is to keep yourself and others in check. Make sure you are always prepared for a candidate training session. Brush up on the material being taught; become an expert on it. If you happen to see someone “slip” and go against the ATM, document it and pull the individual aside and politely let him or her know what you saw happen. This will usually correct the problem and things will run smoothly again. Also send any maltraining reports up to your Area DT as well. They have the right to know what is going on in your squadron just as much as your commander does.
I am certain that by working together, we can enhance our training programs, which will improve our society as a whole. As long as we make sure we eliminate maltraining, keep in constant communication, and master the ATM, then we will achieve our goal of welcoming outstanding cadets into Arnold Air Society.
